The Background

With the BBC R&D team exploring a range of technology and solutions for the future of media production workflows, it was key to understand current processes.

I ran in-depth interviews with BBC staff and freelancers to understand their production processes and perceptions.

The Response

Taking a service design approach, I mapped out activities, media, metadata, and technologies. This created a visual overview of where processes overlapped and pain points occurred. Working in post-it note form to begin with, the maps were then digitised and distributed.

As well as mapping, a set of 7 personas were created to show the varying roles of the TV production world.

It was important to generate personas that looked at production from a multi-skilled perspective, rather than focussing on genre-specific and big-budget productions. This approach allows the personas to be used for various UX projects.
